Only six feet away from Lorrie Morgan - Concert review

June 23, 2011  |  Posted by Susanne

Country superstar and member of the Grand Ole Opry Lorrie Morgan along with her complete US band was in Germany for two concerts. My parents Manni and Traudi (some of you might know her as request monster) and me were among the lucky ones who got tickets for one of her shows at Four Corners Music Hall, Untermeitingen. Four Corners is a restaurant with a music hall which looks like an old saloon. Not very big which make you feel home and has room for maybe 100-200 guests.

Daniel T. Coates, a country singer and songwriter from Pennsylvania, and his band were the supporting act. They heated up the crowd with some cover songs from famous artists like Charlie Louvin or Billy Currington but also shared some of their own songs from the new cd which will be released soon.

When Dan sang his last song I started to get nervous because I knew in a few minutes I'd be very close to THE Lorrie Morgan (OMG)! The band came on stage, got ready for the gig and then they announced her. The crowd shouted and applauded her when she walked on the - for her probably - mini stage. We had front row seats and she was only about 6 feet away from us - I bet she saw my goosebumps! Lorrie Morgan, a beautiful looking lady with a beautiful voice, performed a mix of some of her older hits like "What part of no don't you understand, Except for Monday, Something in red, Leaving on your mind" and "Candy kisses" which was a 1949 number one hit from her dad George Morgan. She also shared some songs of her latest album called "I walk alone" of which she's very proud of because she wrote all the songs on it.

Due to this small audience and her telling some anecdotes it was a very warm and familiar feeling. She told that she's the first time in Germany but her dad used to travel a lot and spoke good German. She didn't really catch up with the language except for the word "nein" (no). As in Nein! Don't do that!. She told us that she basically grew up behind the stage of the Grand Ole Opry due to her dad's career. At age 13 she had her first appearance there and after her dad died she took over his band and moved on with her own career.

She also told about Porter Wagoner and his great but sad song Green green grass of home and that this song actually had two more verses than the radio stations played. Those two verses had never been released but Porter used to sing them behind the Ole Opry stage. Lorrie said she'd like to share those verses with us. So she stood there with her guitar and started to sing with her deep clear sexy voice ... "The old home town ..." and I got even more goosebumps ... "looks upside down, as I lay here on the ground, there's the old freight train that I just fell off ..." then I thought hey wait a minute ... "down the path I look and here comes Bessie, damn good cow, but sure is messy, that's why we got such green, green grass at home." ... and the audience started to laugh. She said .. wait, I'm not done yet, here comes the next verse ... "The old outhouse, its still standing, though the catalogue's used and gone, there's the old oak seat that I used to shhh-sit on, down that path I'd run and hope to make it, there were times I had to fake it, that's why we got such green, green grass at home." What a hilarious moment!

After two hours of great entertainment she left the stage but returned a couple of minutes later because she knew we'd like to hear more. She sang a last song "One of a kind" and then unfortunately really left the stage under big applause and standing ovations. We all got the chance for a "Meet and greet" after the show and of course most stood in line to catch a special personal moment with Lorrie. I got an autograph on a cd and a picture with her. My dad asked for an autograph on his Always Country shirt and I also took a picture of him, mom and Lorrie in the middle. What a thrill! Well as to the shirt ... my dad doesn't own it anymore because someone stole it from him!!! Okay, I have it and of course he won't get it back. And of course I won't ever wash it. Yes I know, it might smell bad after my dad sweated out whatever famous faces on it but if I don't touch it and don't come close to it I might survive it LOL

All in all it was the perfect night with an amazing and beautiful Lorrie Morgan. She's a great entertainer and one of those artists that are able to sing live with a perfect voice. She really deserves to be among the elite members of the Grand Ole Opry. There's just one question left .. where the heck did she hide her chewing gum while singing? I always have a hard job when I'm on air and chew a gum, never know in which corner I should press it. Oh well, I guess I'll have to send her an email and ask for her secret :-)
